  • Calculate Your Carbon Footprint

Find out what your carbon footprint is and how you can make some simple changes to help tackle climate change on the government's Act On CO2 Website: Click here

The Riverside Centre is to host an information evening which will look at the links between waste, recycling and Climate Change. The Island is one of the top local authorities for domestic waste recycling. Shortly a new Gasification plant will come on stream which will convert combustible material from households and businesses into energy for some 2000 homes.

However, the Footprint Trust points out that the majority of households have not joined the kerbside recycling scheme and that a high proportion of businesses are not recycling or reducing their waste.

The event is one of a series, which have been organised by the local Action of Climate Change group in conjunction with the Footprint Trust. The date for the next event is Saturday 3rd May at 7pm at the Riverside Centre, Newport Quay PO30 2QR.

“Recycling reduces energy demand in production and thus reduces greenhouse gases. Reducing the amount of packaging used reduces waste and energy consumption.”

“We hope that those attending will pick up some useful information about the challenges of recycling. We also hope to challenge the myth that things being biodegradable are best”

The new "Isle Cut Carbon" logo has been decided, and can be seen below. The main elements for the design were created by Kristina Grigorjeva who is a student at Ryde School. Visit the Isle Cut Carbon website for more information.

Download a copy of the Declaration (38 kb - pdf) from here. The text gives a good idea about the type of committments which the Council will sign up to.

A couple of years ago the Government’s Chief Scientific Adviser, Professor Sir David King, said, “Climate change is a far greater threat to the world than international terrorism” and more recently The Stern Review spelt out the urgency with great clarity, and makes the point that if we don’t act now, we face irreversible changes. It contains hard-nosed science and hard-nosed economics. We all have a personal responsibility to become aware and do something.

    Our aims are to:
    a) provide visitors with up-to-date information about climate change,
    b) explain in straight-forward terms what you can do to make a difference,
    c) give visitors a chance to check their ecological footprint,
    d) provide a discussion group to enable everyone, but particularly Islanders, to share ideas,
    e) offer our council an opportunity to explain what they are trying to do to reach targets they have set themselves and allow them to display new projects,
    f) explore some of the implications of climate change as it affect
s the Island and the world,
    g) provide access to high quality reference material to help you get better acquainted with the issues,
    h) provide easy links to interesting and supportive sites,
    i) provide a photo album of great pictures submitted by Island people
    j) develop more material as required by users and changing circumstance …

We don’t believe there is one right way to satisfy everyone’s goal of reducing their dependence on fossil fuel generated energy. Everybody has to find their own way, and at their own pace. We do think it’s helpful to have guidelines and we explain these in due course.
